Bacterial flocculation was investigated using 1 to 400 mg/l of sodium bentonite as aid agent. Metal ions, ewpecially Mg^<2+>, greatly affected flocculation in the presence of the bentonite. The washing time of cultivated cells by means of centrifugation and readdition of cell washings to the washed cell suspension had no significant effect on the bacterial flocculation. There was no correlation between the gram reaction of bacteria and their flocculation behavior. Optimum conditions of sodium bentonite and salt concentrations were examined.
