Characterization and treatability studies were conducted on the wasteweter from a dyeing factory in order to determine the most suitable means of treatment of such wastes in Iran. The results may be summarized as follows : 1. Statistical analysis and plots of data(flow rate, pH, log COD, and log temperature) on probaility graph paper gave straight lines, confirming a normal distribution.2. Wastewater analysis gave the following values : BOD 15-105(average 31.9)mg/l;COD 24-888(av. 209.2)mg/l; suspended solids 6-50 (av. 26.0) mg/l; total nitrogen 4-41.5 (av. 37.7)mg/l; phosphate 0.1-1.7 (av. 0.5) mg/l; and pH 7.0-8.9 (av. 7.4).3. Chemical coagulation with ferric chloride at pH 6.5 resulted in an average COD reduction of 51.4% and optical density change of 67.5%.4. Treatment of the dye wastewater in admixture with argificial sewage resulted in little COD reduction but some optical density change.5. Treatment of the dye waste by chemical coagulation followed by activated sludge gave an overall COD reduction of 75.4% and optical density change of 74.9%.The values for activated sludge treatment alone were 63.3% and 50.9%.6. The yield codffcient based on COD, Y, and the decay coeffecient, kd, were 0.356 and 0.071 day^<-1> for the raw wastewater. For wastewater pretreated by coagulation with ferric chloride, the values for Y and kd were 0.452 and 0.077 day^<-1>. The differences in the two yield values and the decay coefficient values may be explained by the influence of ferric chloride on MLVSS determination.
