A system for rapid estimation of 5-day BOD by use of microorganisms immobilized in polyacrylamide gel and an oxygen electrode is described. The electrode current was decreased linearly with time when the elecrode was inserted in a sample solution of organic substrates. The rate of the current decrease was dependent on the concentration of substrates and increased with increasing amount of microorganisms in gel.The rate of decrease was independent of pH in the pH range from 6.6 to 7.4,increased with increasing temperature, and varied linearly with the BOD of the standard solution. The BOD of waste water in an alcohol factory was estimated using this system. The reproducibility was found to be within 6% (relative standard deviation)for the standard solution. This new method has many promising features.
