The soot behavior in direct injection (DI) diesel engine combustion has been investigated using several optical measurements. Measurements were carried out in a small-sized DI diesel engine that allows the optical access for 2-D laser diagnostics. The high-speed direct photography was used to obtain the general combustion characteristics of the test engine. Not only the fuel vapor distribution that is directly related to the soot formation process but also the temporal and spatial distribution of soot particles has been investigated using laser shadowgraph and planar laser-induced incandescence (LII), respectively. In addition, the simultaneous measurement of LII and laser-induced scattering (LIS) has been conducted to clarify the process of soot formation and oxidation in terms of relative soot diameter and soot number density. As a result, the process of soot formation and oxidation in DI diesel engine is discussed using the experimental results obtained in this study.
