A major factor impeding further improvement of the thermal efficiency of spark-ignition engines is the phenomenon of knocking. The study deals with light emission behavior in the preflame reaction interval before hot flame reactions. Radical behavior in the preflame reaction interval prior to autoignition of the end gas was measured by emission spectroscopy. The aim of this research was to obtain a better understanding of preflame reaction behavior under knocking operation in a spark ignition engine. Emission intensity was measured at wavelengths of 395.2 nm (characteristic spectrum of HCHO), 329.8 nm (HCO) and 306.4 nm (OH radical) during a transition from normal combustion to knocking operation. The test fuel used in this study was a blended fuel (70 RON) of n-heptane and iso-octane. The emission intensity waveforms recorded during engine operation on the test fuel indicate the passage of a cool flame and the occurrence of a blue flame in the preflame reaction interval.
