When two rough surfaces with directional asperities are in contact, the elastic and plastic deformations caused by surface asperities vary with cross angle of asperity directions and asperity sizes of two rough surfaces, In this report, the elastic and plastic deformations of machined surfaces with directional asperities were analyzed by considering the following conditions. (1) The elastic and plastic deformations of a certain projection in contact. (2) The elastic deformation of the above-mentioned projection caused by the loads of surrounding projections in contact. (3) The elastic deformation of projections which begin to contact newly by an increase of normal load. The elastic and plastic deformations were obtained by synthesizing the above-mentioned factors with the statistics of surface asperities in contact. It was revealed that the elastic and plastic deformations are classified by the contact surface coefficient and vary with the cross angle of asperity directions and the ratio of projection slopes of two rough surfaces. The comparison between calculated values and experimental data will be explained in the next report.
