An asymmetrical shaft driven by a universal joint has a concentrated mass at the middle, and is assumed to have no distributed mass. The generation mechanism of unstable vibrations is explained by considering the dynamical energy of the shaft system, and the relationship between the natural angular frequencies and the rotating speed at which instability occurs. As for the unstable vibration near the major critical speed, the angular velocity fluctuation of the shaft changes the time rate of growth in the unstable vibration. The asymmetry of a flat shaft determines each of the rotating speeds from which three unstable regions expand at about half the major critical speed. The average input energy supplied during one revolution of the shaft increases monotonously for the S-type unstable vibration, while it has both positive and negative values for the D-type unstable vibration.
