On Interferometry for Measurement of Difference between Two Deformations Using Diffraction Beams

In solid mechanics, measurement of strain, incremental displacement, etc. is often needed. It is not easy, however, to measure them by the usual moire method, because they correspond to the second order moire patterns and their contrast is quite low in most cases. In this paper a new method is developed by modifying the multiplication method. In this method, strain or incremental displacement is expressed by a two beams interference pattern, whose contrast is much higher than that of the second order moire pattern. Especially, when noise in a grating is as low as that in a transparent sheet specimen, the method can be applied twice and an interference pattern corresponding to the third order moire pattern (e.g. incremental strain) is obtained. Thus, analysis of data in the moire method is simplified to a great extent.
