A study on the influence of fuel characteristics upon the concentration of NOx in the exhaust was carried out by using the four-cycle precombustion chamber type diesel engine for automobile use and not only fuels with different volatilities such as gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil, but also one with an additive for improvement of ignitability. In our experiments it was expected that there will be complex effects of the volatility and ignitability in the fuel characteristics on the formation of NOx. The result of our experiments shows that NOx concentration of diesel engine can be reduced by using a fuel more volatile and having higher ignitability, without any sacrifice of specific fuel consumption.
