In this paper, one computing method for static behavious of a machine tool structure having a bolted joint has been proposed to improve the present CAD technique. In the methods developed so far, except that of Dr. Back's, the existence of a bolted joint is not taken into consideration. the empirical expression of the joint stiffness has been used in the computing method presented by Dr. N.Back, whereas in this proposed method the theoretical joint stiffness matrix has been employed to consider the cross receptance of a bolted joint. The interface pressure and displacement distribution of the bolted joint were computed by means of the finite element method, and then from computer results some static behaviours of a bolted joint have also been investigated. To clarify the propriety of the proposed method, the theoretical critical applied load at which the bolted joint begins the separation, was compared with the experimental value.
