A new tmodel of the sunall polaron for sttudying the self-trapping and the off-center instabilityof excitons is presented. The uaaodel consists of 2111 exciton with two internal states, l.s and 2p,coupled with two lattice distortion unodes, the synanaetric and the antisyraa?auetric uaaodes. Thestable and rnetastable states of the exciton-lattice system are calculated ntunaerically witlain theadiabatic approxitaaation, The obtained phase diagratn shows the inter-relation between the twotypes of' synanaetry breaking, naraaely the breaking of the trsrnslational symttaetry (self-trapping)and the breaking of' inversion symrnetry (off'-center instability) in a trnified way.
