Nurnerical calctrlations of the ground state in the exciton-lattice systena are perforrned f'or asmall polaron ttuodel with the adiabatic approximation. Stable and naetastable states of thesystern are obtained rigorottsly, without presurming any spatial pattern of the lattice distortion. The energy and the spatial extension of the stable states are obtained f'or one, two, three dirnension cases. The characteristic feattrre of the self-trapping is revealed for the each dimension andcritical valtres of the exciton-lattice cotrpling constants are also obtained. They are comparedwith those of' previous studies where the spatial pattern of the lattice distortion is prestrmed.
