Surface acoustic wave (SANV) parametric oscillation is stuclied with the use of thenonlinear Mathieu equation: zv,-l-Azv,-l-(.4-f#sin2u7)zvl-(.'o'=O, which can bederived from the nonlinear wave equation in a piezoelectrie solid. The nonlinearmodel exhibits the various experimental features of SAW pan'ametric oscillation: (i)the excitation of the 1 /2 subltarmonic mode, (ii) the frequettcy dependence of theamplitude and the linear growth rate and (111) the saturation ol' the amplitude, whichhave been observed in LiNb0.. Necessary condition for chaos and effect of dissipalion upon the onset of chaos for the single mode model is also clarified.
