We make a theoretical study of ballistic transport phenomena in metallic narrowchannels smaller than the mean free path of the electrons. We find that the quantizedconductance, which changes in steps of e'/ nh as a function of the channel width, is aproperty of freely propagating electron waves in a narrow channel connected To muchwider leads. It is also shown that the channel conductance is also quantized as a func-Lion of the magnetic field, and the quantized steps are smeared out at high temperalures or at high channel condtactance.
