An additional anisotropy is induced in cobalt in hcp phase when polycrystalline specimens are cooled from high temperatures in a magnetic field through the crystalline transformation temperature. The induced anisotropy is found to be due to a preferential grain orientation of hcp phase, for which the crystalline anisotropy energy is proposed to be responsible.
