X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on a single crystal sample of the rare earth metal holmium. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the c-lattice parameter was studied in detail below the Neel temperature of 132 K. Magnetic structural phase transitions were observed as a change in the c-lattice parameter. In addition, lattice modulations induced by the magnetic structure were investigated by observing satellite reflections. A model based on the exchange magnetostriction can explain these magnetostrictive behaviors. The magnetic structures which were used in the analysis were reproduced by the self-consistent mean field calculation. The model has explained the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the c-lattice parameter, as well as the behaviors of the wave number and the amplitude of the lattice modulation.
