Theory of Intermediate-Valence State in Sm Compounds

The intermediarte-valence states of SlTlB6 and SnaS are described in terrns of the periodicAnderson model conaprised of tlae localized 4 j' taatnltiplet states 'H5 /2 and "Fg of' two ad.j?rcentconfigturations 4 f' and 4 f', the xvide condttction band states represented by the plane wavefunctions, and the hybridizartions between the 4 J' and tlae condtrction stattes. We take holepicture and introdtrce J'errn.i operators representing the states of" H5 /2 and a bose operator forthe "Fo singlet for each Sm site. At low teutaper?rttures, the bosons f'orm a condensate, andconsequently the j'er'rniort states hybridize with the conduction-lc?tnd states to beconae itinerant,acconapanied with an stnisotropic gap strtmctture, The stmscejctibility is dotninated by the VanVleck contri bution f'rotn the excited "F? level of' 4 f', while the 'H 5 7 2 states of' 4./" zives a smallPauli-type contribtrtion, in good agreement xvith experiraaent?r[ restults.
