Longitudinal relaxation of "C and 'H in chloroform dissolved in a nematic liquidcrystal has been observed between 25 and 34'C at 89.6 and 400.1 MHz (for 'H) by theselective and nonselective inversion recovery method. The data can be satisfactorilyexplained by a combination of fast reorientation of the solute and slow fluctuations inthe nematic phase, under consideration of the intramolecular dipole-dipole and exter-nal random field interactions together with cross correlations between the two. Localstructure fluctuations in the nematic phase have played a substantial role in the spinrelaxations. The external random field interaction on the proton and the cross correla-Lion relating this interaction have considerably been dependent on the observing fre-quency.[longitudinal relaxation, "C-'H spin system, nematic Phase 5, local structure ll fluctuation, order director fluctuation, intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction ]
