"C and 'H relaxation times of a coupled "C-'H spin system dissolved in a nematicphase have been measured at 400 MHz (for 'H) by the selective and nonselective inver-sion recovery method. The relaxation times of doublet lines of each spin are differentfrom each other. Especially, when a 'H line is inverted selectively, the relaxation timeof the "C line connected progressively to the inverted one is fairly different dependingon which line of the '11 is inverted. Master equations for longitudinal relaxation arederived under the assumption that in addition to two relaxation mechanisms of the in-tramolecular dipole-dipole and external random field interactions, interference effectsbetween the two might be nonnegligible in the oriented phase. The differences in therelaxation times have been explained by this interference effect.["C-'H spin system, longitudinal relaxation, nematic Phase 5, cross correlation, ll intermolecular dipole-dipole interactionl
