An Ising model with nearest neighbor antiferromagnetie and next nearestneighbor ferromagnetic interactions is studied by the phenomenological renormal-ization method. The phase transition to the V'JX .'x structure is of the secondorder for weak fields, and the critical exponents y7:1.2 and 7:0.30 are consistentwith the conjectured values of the 3-state Potts model. Beyond a tricritical pointthe transition becomes of the first order for strong fields. The tricritical exponenty...:1.73 and 7..:0.21 are also in agreement with the 3-state Potts tricriticalvalues y47.=12/7 and t7'.'=4/21. The XY-like phase transition at zero fields,which was obtained by the Monte Carlo simulations, is not found in the presentcalculation.
