Simulation on Curvature Instability of a Two-Dimensional Vesicle Induced by Impurities

We study a curvature instability of a two-dimensional (2-D) vesicle induced by "impurities (intercalated molecules)". Impurity yields the free energy cost proportional to the membrane curvature and the impurity concentration. By simulating a model vesicle with spheres connected with tethered chains, shape transition is observed from ellipse to bi-lobocyte depending on the coupling constant between the vesicular curvature and impurities.
