A microscopic model is presented to provide a qualitative basis for understand-ing the Fe(II):Fe(III) transition accompanying molecular distortions inducedby the electron transfer in hemoproteins. The coupling of iron tons with theintramolecular distortions and the intermolecular coupling between the moleculardistortions are the driving force of the Fe(II):Fe(III) transitions in the presentmodel where the electron number of the system is varied as an external parameter. It is shown that the various types of the Fe(II):Fe(III) transitions such ascontinuous or discontinuous and with or without the molecular distortions mayoccur with changing the number of electrons.
