I-Iendrickson et al. (Inorg. Chem. 20 (1981 ) 131 ) showed that the transition tempera-lure for the high-spin:low-spin transition in the spin crossover compound [Fe.Cr. .(3-OCH,-SalEen).]PF, decreases with increasing the Cr concentration, whereas thetransition temperature in [Fe.Co. .(3-OCI-l.-SalEen).]PF. increases with increasingCo concentration. These dilution effects on the high-spin:low-spin transitions isstudied on the basis of the ligand field theory by taking account of the coupling be-tween d electrons of iron and a lattice strain. The present model clarifies the origins ofthe two kinds of dilution effects. In the latter case, the lattice contraction is inducedby the Co ions. The effect of the contraction of the transition is reasonably treated asthe pressure effect. The calculated temperature dependence of the effective magneticmoment for various dopant concentrations reproduces the essential features of thetwo types of observed results.
