Usefulness of the first-order exchange Coulo?nb approximation has beenexamined by applying it to the electron impact exccitation processes of helium-like ions. Collision strengths for the excitation from the groutad state to the n=2states (2'S, 2'S, 2'P and 2'P) for Li", C", O" and Si"" have been cat-culated at energies up to five times threshold energies. It is found that the presentapproximation improves the Coulomb-Born-Oppenheitrxer approximationremarkably and gives results comparable with the five-state close-couplingcalculation of Wyngaarden et al. (1979). It is also found that the short'rangedistortion effect is largely taken care of in the present first-order approximation.
