X-Ray K Absorption Edge Structures of Ligand Chlorine Ion in Some Cobalt Coordination Compounds

The X-ray Cl K absorption spectra in [Co(N'H.).JC[., [Co(N11.).CI]CI.,trans-[Co(NH3).Cl.]Cl and Cs.[CoCl.] are measured with a high-resolutionvacuum two-crystal spectrometer. The spectra, except that c?f [Co(NH.).]CI3,show an extremely narrow abs;orption line at thc absorptic>n threshold. Theresult is interpreted on the basis of molecular orbital theory and it is proposedthat the intensity of these narrow absorption lines depends on the chemical statebetween the cobalt and ligand chlorine tons. The na?'row absorption line may wellbe attributed to transitions of the Cl l,v electron into the e: antibonding orbitalshaving partially the 3p character of chlorine in [Co(NH.). 5 ctjct. and trans-[Co(NH.).Cl.]CI. In Cs.[CoCl..] it may be ascribed to the Cl Xs-t5 transitions.
