The mechanism of the current generation in a colljsionless plasma by a train oftravelling mirrors with modulated phase velocity is studied based on the theoryof intrinsic stochasticity. It is shown that, if the phase modttlatjon is small, the main contribution to thecurrent generation comes from the phase mixing of the trajectories of trappedelectrons in each Fourier component of a driving wave. For the case of a moderatephase modulation, however, formation of a large stochastic region due to theoverlapping of printary resonances is very effective for increasing the generatedcurrent. Large phase modulation has little advantage in the cturrent generatuonbecause the stochastic regions are formed, so to speak, at random in the phaseplane. The results of analytical evaluation based on the above theory agree quite wellwith restmlts of nunterical experiments.
