A linear theta pinch machine, STP-L has been constructed to study the im-provement of the heating efficiency by successivze two fast capacitor discharges. The concept of the staged theta pinch which assumes the application of ideal twosquare magnetic field pulses is modified into more practical one. It is demonstratedexperimentally and theoretically that the control of the small dip which appearsjust after the maximum implosion gives considerable effects on the final plasmatemperature. The maximum heating gain by such control is found to be 1.6.Under a typical operating condition in which the dip is controlled we achieved thefollowing plasma parameters ; the plasma diameter is equal to 3.2 cm, the averageplasma density 5.3 x [0" cm ' and the total temperature 650 eV.
