The transient flow of a slightly conducting gas in a pipe under an applied magneticfield with axial symmetry is considered. The solutions to the linearized equations forsubsonic flow show that in the asymptotic limit as /-+m, these solutions do notnecessarily all tend to coinside with the corresponding solutions to the steady flow, anddiffer from those by constants which are determined depending on the strength of themagnetic field and the initial values of the flow quantities. The time for the flow toachieve the steady state is also evaluated.
