The spatial growth of the two-dimensional waves excited artificially in the Blasiusboundary layer on a flat plate is investigated. The basic flow is assumed to be quasi-parallel, and the streamwise variation of the amplitude and the wave number of thewave is expressed in terms of a power series of the amplitude. The coefficients of thesuccessive powers, which depend on the distance downstream from the excitation point, are computed to the second order of the expansion for fixed oscillation frequencies. It isfound that the nonlinearity suppresses or amplifies the waves depending on the distancedownstream and that the intensification becomes stronger as the waves propagatedownstream. The theoretical curve of the growth of the amplitude agrees well withexperiments so far as the amplitude remains below 1%. At larger amplitudes, thediscrepancy becomes appreciable probably due to the three-dimensionality of the wave.
