The behavior of the primary electron bean'm due to interaction with a plasnaaand neutx'al atonas are studied experinaentally by injecting an electron beam intoa plasnaa with paranteters of beana energy, beanc and plasnaa densities. The energyspectruuta of the beana, initially having a sharp energy spectruna, broadens towardhinher and lower energies along tl'ne direction of beam flow as an increasingfunction of the above variables under the influence of waves excited. The intensityand, especially, the frequency of these waves are inaportant factors for the energybroadening, since an externally applied wave causes a ntarked change in the energyspectrunt of the bea?aa when its frequency is near tlcat of the excited waves and itsantnlitude is above a certain value? Besides collision with gas atomt'ms, the fluctua-Lions are found to be responsible for the spatial scattering of the beam. Due tothe variation of the beam energy distribution function, the waves with a broadspectrum near the p]as?ma frequency set in saturation at a relatively short distancefront the gun. In the above nonlinear systent, the naturally excited waves aretotally suppressed by an external wave.
