NMR Study of Interaction between Interstitial Hydrogen and Substitutional Vanadium Atoms in Niobium Metal

The interaction of hydrogen with vanadium atom has been studied by NMRmeasurement in the ternary systems Nb)-..V..H,. The Iinew'idth of "Nbresonance absorption curve is sharply decreased with an increase of the hydrogenconcentration up to x=x=y, and hardly changed in the range of ,v>,vy. The Knightshift of "V resonance, Ky also shows the characteristic change at x=x.. That is,the gradient of Ky, dK./dx is greater when x<x=y than x>x.. The results areexplained by the formation of vanadittm-hydrogen pair, which is generatedmainly to reduce the internal strain induced by the difference in atomic sizesbetween niobium and vanaditum atoms. The influence of the pair on the resonanceparameters at the niobium and vanadium nuclei is discussed from the geometricalconsideration of the pair.
