Nonlinear unodulation of strongly dispersive ion-acoustic standing wavesproduced by some obstacle in a uniform plasma flow, is investigated by meansof the reductive perturbation method. The two fluid equations composed of coldions and isothermal electrons are txsed, which in the specific ranges of Machnumber and wavenumber permit the spatial waves. Conseqttently, the systemis reduced to the nonlinear Schr6dinger equation expressed in ternas of threeindependent variables which are responsible for slow two-dinaensional spatialvariation and slower temporal change. It is further shown that in general thenonlinear Schr6dinger equation derived from the Korteweg-de Vries eqtnation isalways stable as to the modulational instability.
