The cross sections for the transitions 5S3jz-+5P37z, 5S377.+5P37z, 5Pgjz+5D3,z,5S.,.+5D37. and 5.5.jz+5D57. in the hydrogen atoun by proton impact are cal-culated on the basis of the imnpact paranaeter method. Distant collisions aredominant and the couplings aunong the sub-levels belonging to the same n areimportant at low energies, but the couplings with the levels belonging to differentn's are negligibly sntall. The Glauber and the Born approxinmations are alsoapplied to the same problena and the Glauber approximation gives a good agree-ment with the impact paranaeter naethod over a. wide energy range down to atleast about 100 eV.
