Electronic States of Cu_nO_m Clusters in High T_c Superconductors

Electronic states are calculated by the DV-Xa method for (i) the planar octahedroncluster Cu.0.., (ii) the planar pyramid cluster Cu.O,., (iii) the planar square clusterCu.O,., and (iv) the linear square cluster Cu.0,., in the high -I. superconductor ox-ides. The calculation is performed for cases where the cluster is completely ionic andwhere a single hole or electron is doped. The hole doped in the Cu.0.. cluster stays inthe Cu-0 basal plane and does not stay at the apex 0 site. The hole or electron dopedin the remaining three clusters stays over the whole cxluster. It is important to take intoaccount of Madelung energy Nut the calculation of electronic st;ttes of clusters cut outfrom crystals.
