Multiplet Structure in X-Ray 3p-Shell Photoelectron Spectra of Chromium Compounds

The method of calculating the final state of the A-enaission and the X-ray;-photoelectron emission in transition-metal compounds arc shown. The p-dCoulomb and exchange interactions are expressed in terms of matrix elementsfor the two-electron system of the p- and 7-electrons by using the coefficients offractional parentage, CFP. An approximation which makes manageable the 3p-hole problem of the transition-metal compounds is presented and its validity isdiscussed. By comparing the 37-photoelectron emission spectrttm of trivalentchromium compounds calculated by the use of this approximation with theexperiment, the cubic field strength is determined to be a little larger than 3 eV andthe reduction factors for the p-d Cox,tlomb and exchange interactions to be unity,showing the hole-induced covalency to be small for the t., orbital.
