Structural and Magnetic Properties of Pseudobinary System Zr_<1-x>Mo_xFe_2

Crystallographic, magnetic and Mossbauer studies on Zr_<1-x>Mo_xFe_2 are reported. Crystal structure changes with increasing x from MgCu_2 type (x≦0.15) to MgZn_2 type (x≧0.25). Magnetic moment of Fe estimated from magnetization is nearly unchaged (&ihkap;1.6μ_B) in x≦0.15 and decreases considerably in x≧0.2. Mossbauer spectra at 78K showed the existence of Fe with hyperfine fields of 217 and 199 kOe in Zr_<0.9>Mo_<0.1>Fe_2 and of Fe with 99 and 0 kOe in Zr_<0.75>Mo_<0.25>Fe_2. Magnetic properties of MgZn_2 type compounds Zr_<0.7>Mo_<0.3>Fe_y and Zr_<0.5>Mo_<0.5>Fe_y change from weak ferromagnetism for y=2.0 to paramagnetism for y=1.6.
