This paper describes the evaluation and expectation of school career guidance which has been published in the Journal of, Educational Sociology and the program on annual conference of this society. From 1950 to 1991, it will be clssified according to four terms. The first term (1950〜1958) mainly concerned investigation of the local community on career guidance concerning the students who have graduated from lower secondary school. From 1958 to 1968, the main themes of career guidance study were additionally preparation for the entrance examination for upper secondary school. From 1969 to 1978, the themes of career guidance, career education in upper secondary school, the function of higher education, and credentialism in our society were major subjects in this field of educational sociology. As for the fourth term from 1979 to 1991, the most important themes are career tracking at the upper secondary school level, career maladjustment, career choice, and career patterns for youth. The tendencies of these studies can be outlined using the following headings, investigation of the local community : career for lower secondary school graduats ; career for upper secondary school students ; technological innovation ; the problem of entrance examination ; a closed school ; vocational socialization. The micro-study of career guidance would be much expectant in future. It is very important that we longitudinal study career choice for youth. In addition we should bridge the gap between the theories accumulated of educational sociology and career guidance practice in school.
