民族音楽と異文化理解への教育的アプローチ

"Internationalization" is one of the main themes of recent Japanese education. Since the early years of the Meiji era (1868-1912), we have concentrated on absorbing Western culture. Today, "internationalization" requires us to understand non-Western cultures as well. Even in Japanese music education, we assumed that music meant Western music, and our goal was to learn and absorb its structure and sound system. As a result, we did not teach the phonemic system or knowledge of Japanese traditional music. What do undergraduate students, brought up under current music education guidelines, think of Asian folk music? With educational materials from Asian countries, I conducted the experiment of giving my students an opportunity to experience several varieties of musical expression. Through this experiment, the students discovered that Asian folk music has good qualities that Western music does not have. Moreover, they came to understand that folk music is deeply related to its culture and spiritual tradition. This confirms the possibility that a people's music may become an avenue to the understanding of their cultural values. I have every confidence that studying Asian music can help us not only to understand the beauty and excellence of foreign music but also to respect the uniqueness of foreign cultures.
