This paper traces in historical perspective the course of music education in both Western Europe and Japan. A cursory glance at the history of music education in Japan may not reveal any close links to music educations in other countries. This paper, however, attempts to show that in fact both Japanese music and education have been profoundly influenced throughout the ages by developments overseas. For example, the ancient Greek emphasis on an all-round education had deep profound repercussions in post-renaissance perspectives for music education in Europe. In much the same way, the establishment of organized music education in Japan was influenced by Chinese music and etiquette. A historical treatment of the basic concepts in music education is also pertinent when considering present-day and twenty-first century developments in music education. This paper draws on recent academic findings to support its argument.
