Characterization of Precipitation and River Water Chemistry for Measuring Rates of Weathering and Soil Formation in Iu River Watershed, Southwestern Japan

The precipitation and river water chemistry were characterized in detail for measuring the rates of rock weathering and soil formation in three small subwatersheds of the Iu river, southwestern Japan. The monitoring of the precipitation and the river water continued for 3y, during the period April 1989-March 1992. The three subwatersheds consist of different geological materials : Andesite (denoted as A), Granite (denoted as G), and Basic pyroclastic materials (denoted as B). Precipitation contained large amounts of K^+, Na^+, Ca^<2+>, Mg^<2+>, Cl^-, and SO_4^<2->, which fluctuated seasonally due to the influence of sea salt particle spray and acid deposition. River water chemistry was strongly controlled by the geological materials. The relative order of concentrations of various elements in river water was as follows, Ca^<2+> : B < A < G ; Mg^<2+> : A < B < G ; Si : A < B < G ; HCO_3^- A < B < G, and Fe : G < A < B. The concentrations of most of these elements were higher in summer and lower in winter in both andesitic and basic pyroclastic subwatersheds, indicating the effect of the temperature on the rates of rock weathering and soil formation. River water discharge was negatively correlated with the concentrations of Ca^<2+>, Na^+, HCO_3^-, and SO_4^<2->, and positively with those of NO_3^-. The concentrations of NH_4^+, Cl^-, Al, and Fe did not show clear correlation with the discharge. The amounts of Si, NO_3^-, Cl^-, K^+, Na^+, Mg^<2+>, and Al transported were positively correlated with the amount of discharge. However, Ca^<2+>, SO_4^<2->, NH_4^+, HCO_3^- and Fe did not show significant correlation with the discharge.
