"Chloritized" vermiculite and smectite in the B horizons of two Inceptisols derived from volcanic ash and two Spodosols were studied by a combination of methods. The "chloritized" minerals did not expand with Mg- or Ca-saturation and glycerol solvation and did not collapse upon K-saturation and heating at 300℃ after treatment with dithionite-citrate or dithionite-citrate and oxalate-oxalaic acid, whereas they did expand and collapse after the subsequent extraction with hot 1/3M sodium citrate. All these treatments extracted substantial amounts of Si, Al and Fe from the clays containing the "chloritized" minerals. The materials extracted with citrate had Si/Al molar ratios close to 1.0 or 2.0 and gave infrared spectra of layer silicates. It was concluded that certain "chloritized" vermiculites and smectities do not contain hydroxy-Al but contain aluminosilicate with the composition of 1 : 1 or 2 : 1 layer silicate as an "interlayer" material.
