The elementary compositions and spectrophotometric properties of humic acids in present surface horizons and buried humic horizons with age from 28,000 years B.P. to the present were studied. The C and O percent and C/N ratios of humic acids increased with age, but the H and N percent and H/C ratios decreased. A rapid change in the elementary composition of humic acids occurred until about 3,000 years after burial, and a slow change until about 18,000 years B.P. The elementary composition of humic acids did not change very much from 18,000 years B.P. to 28,000 years B.P. The O/C ratios increased until 18,000 years B.P. and decreased after 18,000 years B.P. The humification-degree once increased, and decreased afterward, becoming stable after 18,000 years B.P. The 'free' humic acid showed a tendency to change more than the 'combined' humic acid. The elementary compositions of buried humic acids were somewhat within the range of those of A type humic acids with high RF value in present surface horizons. The N percent of buried humic acids was lower than that of A type humic acids in present surface horizons, and the O percent and C/N ratios of buried humic acids were higher. The elementary compositions of buried humic acids were distinctly different from the other type humic acids in present surface horizons. The buried humic acids belonged to A type and their IR spectra coincided well with that of A type humic acid in present surface horizons.
