Following the preceding paper, the authors examined the infrared absorption characteristics of soils. Soils were tentatively divided into the four components as follows : The mixture of the soil and 0.5% sodium hydroxide, previously heated at 100℃ for 30 minutes, was centrifuged (8000 r.p.m. for 30 minutes), and the supernatant solution was dissolved in dilute alkali and ultrafiltered. The precipitate (U1) was obtained by acidifying the filtrate. Black residue on the ultra-membrane was named U2. The surface black layer of the soil settled at the bottom of the centrifugal tube was named Z1,and the lower white or yellowish brown layer Z2. According to the infrared spectra, U1 corresponds to humic acid. U2 consists of organic matter and inorganic matter mainly composed of clay. Relative contents of these fractions differ from soil to soil. The organic matter is considered largely to be rather aliphatic and less soluble in alkali, but there is contained a small amount of humic acid having higher degree of humification, compared with U1. It is presumed from the infrared spectra that dominant clay existing in U2 of the soil derived from volcanic ash belongs to allophane, and kaolin (?), and that of the soils of another origin to kaolin (probably kaolinite). In the order ; U1→U2→Z1→Z2,the content of organic matter decreased remarkably. With the case of clay content the reverse happens, at the same time the absorption bands indicating the presence of quratz or silica became clear. Besides, the infrared absorption spectra were determined on some clay minerals, silica, alumina, iron oxides, aluminium, iron, and calcium humates etc.
