STUDIES ON THE HUMUS FORMS OF FOREST SOILS : VII. Nitrogen Transformation during Incubation

The changes in inorganic nitrogen levels during 20 weeks' incubation were examined using both non-dried and air-dried samples from each layer and horizon of 9 out of 29 brown forest soils previously (1,2) employed. Also, the effects of air-drying on the level of inorganic nitrogen were investigated. The results obtained will be summarized as follows. 1) The N_I increased most remarkably at an early period in both non-dried and air-dried samples, and later increased continuously with a lag phase in the former, but none in the latter. 2) In the majority of both non-dried and air-dried samples, the production patterns of NH_4-N agreed with those of N_I because of the small quantity of NO_3-N. However, in samples where much NO_3-N was generated, an alternate rise and fall of NH_4-N and NO_3-N took place, although decreases in NO_3-N content were observed only in non-dried samples. 3) Air-drying caused increases of N_I in L layers and decreases in F-H-A layers, and the larger the amount of N_I in the non-dried sample, the greater is the extent of rise and fall in N_I resulting from air-drying. The N_I in A-A-B horizons changed slightly with air-drying. 4) The DE(I) initially increased up to a maximum between 3 and 5 weeks, and thereafter, decreased down to minus values for F-H-A layers, or maintained plus values for A-A-B horizons. 5) In air-dried sample, the incipient increase of DE(I) was due to the abrupt increase of NH_4-N, while the nitrification was restrained during the same period. The nitrification in air-dried samples was observed to increase later in the incubation period, after the easily mineralizable nitrogen which was accelerated to generate by air-drying preparation was completely converted into NH_4-N.
