Changes in Populations and Activity of Three Fusarium spp. in Soils with Different Properties

The factors responsible for the changes in the populations and activity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani, Fusarium solani f. sp. radicicola, and Fusarium moniliforme in five soils with different properties were studied in the laboratory, using soil samples collected from various locations in Japan. The changes in the population density and activity of these Fusarium spp. inoculated in the soils were determined by the dilution plate method and the production of CO_2 in soil respectively, during incubation. A significant negative correlation was obtained between the population density and activity of these Fusarium spp. and the nitrate content of the soils. Multiplication of these Fusarium spp. inoculated in the nonsterilized soils was more restricted than that in the sterilized soils. Changes in the population density of F. oxysporum f. sp. raphani and F. moniliforme differed markedly among the soils, while the population density of F. solani f. sp. radicicola slightly differed and did not change appreciably in the nonsterilized soils during incubation.
