Four kinds of high-tensile structural steel sheets of Mn-series, Cr-series ; and Mo-series, each of which contains small quantity of the corresponding element, were manufactured experimentally and studied with reference to the melting, working effciency in rolling and properties of the sheet. The specimens of the following analyses were taken from the sheet of 12mm. thickness which had been rolled from the ingot each weighing 7, 500kg and being made by the basic electric furnace. C Si Mn P S Cr Mo Cu Mn-series 0.18 0.18 1.65 0.018 0.007 - - 0.246 Cr-series 0.18 0.19 1.09 0.016 0.007 0.66 - 0.246 Mo-series 0.18 0.24 1.21 0.018 0.004 - 0.28 0.254 Ducol Steel 0.25 0.30 1.31 0.017 0.018 - - 0.320 No difficulty was met with in melting and rolling. The properties of the sheet as rolled fall in the range : tensile strength 55-65kg/mm^2, yield point 40-45kg/mm^2, and elongation 20%. When various analyses were compared, they showed negligible difference in mechanical properties either as rolled or as simply heat-treated ; but the single-Mn series steels which are curriently used were proved to be economical and practical ; and, when subjected to a further heat treatment such as quenching and tempering, the Cr- and Mo- series proved to be slightly better.
