Statistical Dynamics of a Quenched Thermodynamically Unstable System

We study the dynamics of phase separation in a system quenched from one phase region at high temperatures to inside of the coexistence curve. The scaling law which appears in the late stage of the ordering process is discussed on the basis of the statistical self-similarity of the ordered domains. The evaporation-condensation mechanism of droplets is analyzed and the scaling form of the scattering function is obtained. The theory is applicable for small values of the volume fraction of a minority phase. The result exhibits a satisfactory agreement with the experiment of binary alloys with one adjustable parameter. A representation of the motion of a droplet surface suitable for a system with anisotropic surface tension is also presented.
