The phase transition of a two-component sine-Gordon system is investigated in two dimensions. This model describes the floating solid-commensurate phase transition of an adsorbed system on a periodic substrate introduced recently by Halperin and Nelson. A renormalization group analysis is made in detail when the misfit parameter is absent. Although the present model is related to a melting of a two-dimensional solid due to dislocations through a duality transformation, the results obtained contain several important differences from the behaviors near the melting point. The commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in the presence of the misfit parameter is also discussed brifly within a mean field approximation.
