Quantum Density of an Inhomogeneous Electron Gas in the Local Oscillator Approximation : Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics

Quantum density of an inhomogeneous electron gas is obtained systematically in the local oscillator approximation, by a quantum-statistical mechanical approach. Corrections to the Thomas-Fermi density consist of three parts; the gradient term, the density part oscillating through the change of local potential and the Friedel-oscillation-like part which is modulated by a periodic factor similar to the above one. It is shown that the oscillating part is more important than the gradient term for one- and two-dimensional cases while they are comparable to each other for three-dimensional case.
