The overall nature of the image potential term is studied classically for a flatinterfacial zone, where the dielectric constant changes from e. to c. as a functionof distance normal to the interf'ace. A perturbation theoretic approach is taken, where >'=(et -[2)/(81 *ex) is shown to be a relevant exransion rarameter. Resultsuseful in treating the diffusive interface are given up to second order in y.
